In den Jahren 1955 und 1956 bereiste Heinz Westphal gemeinsam mit seiner Frau, der Ethnologin Sigrid Westphal-Hellbusch, den südlichen Irak. Die Ausstellung In den Schilflandschaften von Euphrat und Tigris versammelt ca. 40 Aufnahmen Westphals von dieser Reise. Die Fotografien zeigen die Landschaft, die Bauten und das Volk der Madan, der Bewohner des Marschengebietes am Unterlauf des Euphrat und Tigris. Das Gebiet ist besonders durch seine außergewöhnlichen Schilfbauten bekannt geworden. Die Ma'dan errichten aus Schilf und Rohrkolben künstliche Wohninseln und Häuser, stellen Matten und Gerät her. Ihre Lebensweise stellt eine einzigartige Anpassung an ihre Schilfumwelt dar.
Die Ausstellung bildet den Auftakt zu einer Reihe von Foto-Ausstellungen, die von der am Ethnologischen Museum 2009 neu gegründeten Abteilung Visuelle Anthropologie initiiert werden sollen.
