Nan Goldins Fotografien sind Bilder ihres Lebens. Sie zeigen in unerschöpflicher Fülle und schwirrender Farbigkeit die Familie Goldins ihre Freunde, Bekannten, Liebhaber. Seit sie mit 14 Jahren ihr Elternhaus verließ, lebte sie mit einer Subkulturszene von Drag Queens, Transvestiten, Trans- und Homosexuellen zunächst in Boston, ab 1978 in New Yorks Lower East Side und von 1991 bis 1994 vor allem in Berlin. Seither kehrte sie immer wieder in die Stadt zurück.
Die Ausstellung gewährt mit 80, teils noch nie gezeigten Fotografien einen umfassenden Überblick der in Berlin entstandenen Arbeiten. Vier Bildtableaus, die so genannten grids, ergänzen die Fotografien in Form von narrativen Sequenzen und leisten einen wichtigen Beitrag zum Verständnis von Goldins Berlin-Bild. Der Besucher erhält anhand von Künstler- und Selbstporträts, Interieurs, Stillleben und Straßenszenen Einblick in die Person und das Umfeld der Künstlerin und erlebt Berlin als Ort der Kreation und Transition.
