Olaf Holzapfel sucht bevorzugt in Megalopolen wie Tokio nach Spuren, die Landschaft und visuelle Geschichte in urbanen Räumen hinterlassen. In der Serie Nakano Sakaue wird Nebensächliches wie das Blindenleitsystem Tokios zum Gegenstand der Betrachtung. Gezackt, zerschnitten und offenbar ohne normative Ordnung erscheinen die Zeichen wie zufällig zusammengesetzt und sind doch verständlich. Ihre Logik ist visuell. Der Boden unter den Füßen beschreibt eine Form der Kommunikation. Die Zeichen machen den mentalen Innenraum zur Peripherie, veranschaulichen den Übergang von der Innenwelt des wahrnehmenden blinden Großstadtmenschen zu seiner Außenwelt.
Holzapfels Fotografien wollen das Gegenteil einer Endform, das Gegenteil von etwas Endgültigem beweisen. Sie zeigen, dass die Enden des Denkens im Alltag sichtbar sind.
