C/O Berlin präsentiert erstmalig in Deutschland ca. 80 Meisterwerke des kanadischen Fotografen und Pioniers der Farbfotografie Fred Herzog.
Das Leben ist farbig, schwarz-weiß aber realistischer lange galt Farbfotografie als nicht besonders wertvoll. Einzig und allein Schwarzweißbilder waren in der Kunst unumstritten. Künstlerische Farbfotografie war banal und amateurhaft, ein Medium des Kommerz und Dilettantismus. Die Bilder wirken seltsam vertraut und spielen so mit der Bewertung des Betrachters, der kaum zu sagen vermag, ob er sie schon einmal im Familienalbum oder in einem Museum gesehen hat. Sind dies wirklich nur die Schnappschüsse oder das Werk eines Künstlers? Entstehen die intensiven Farben aufgrund der schlechten Filmqualität oder sind sie Absicht?
Anfang der 1950er Jahre beginnt Fred Herzog diese etablierten Sehgewohnheiten und Lehrmeinungen zu revolutionieren. Als Pionier der Farbfotografie perfektionierte er den Blick. Seine Motive sind die Straßen von Vancouver, Supermärkte, Tankstellen, Bars, Stadtszenen, Landschaften und immer wieder die Menschen seiner Umgebung die Höhen und Tiefen des amerikanischen Traums.
