As peripheral groups, homeless persons and punks are a sector of society that hardly attracts any attention. Although they and their social difficulties cannot well be overlooked, in big cities above all, they are often positively regarded as taboo by contrast with other problem groups like children and young people. Ernst Rincks photographs show Berlin from this other side. He has sought out homeless persons and punks in an everyday context on Berlins Alexanderplatz, at the Bahnhof Zoo station and at the Kottbusser Tor. His pictures give us a view of details which we would otherwise be all too inclined to overlook.
Ernst Rinck, born in 1938, started to take photographs at the age of 14. Later he experimented with a homemade enlarger, with slides and underwater photography. Since 2000 Rincks work has focused on people in the marginal areas of society.
