Nicole Ahland: lightning space #1
2009 © c. wichtendahl. galerie.
Modern life is characterised by an overstimulation of the senses by the hectic pace, noise and a torrent of often violent images. In opposition to this, Nicole Ahland poses the question of personal speed and ones own centre of gravity, a sketch of imagined spaces of recollection. Her photographs show rooms that are frequently veiled, sometimes shifted into shadow, at other times brilliantly lit. They communicate a certain mood, a particular atmosphere. Her rooms are storehouses for history and recollection. Sometimes they are empty of people, sometimes figures appear like hovering shadows but they always yield a reflection of human presence. Nicole Ahlands photos stand for the possibility of personal centering in a time where concepts like abdication of space, daydream and deceleration have acquired new meanings. Using the classical resources of photography, she creates transparencies, overlaps and blurred contours pictures full of sensuous energy that are imbued with a great stillness.
