A.P.P.A. is an installation created by seven artists of the Scotty Enterprises art society. Contemporary modes of handling vast mountains of graphic imagery, together with the mechanisms of communication which allow for their immediate availability, form the conceptual crux of the project. Slide images are projected at random by beamer, drawing on a pool of private snapshots by the artists, each artist contributing up to 100 of these. A sound track reproduces the imitated evening slideshow which the artists organised previously as a group event, using these same pictorial materials. Elucidations of pictures, comments and questions make themselves heard. As a result of the random sequence, the sound track is not in sync with what is happening in the installation. It is no longer clear what comments belong to which pictures. New levels of meaning are elicited from the snapshots, associations are set up and hiatuses created. At the same time the question suggests itself to what extent graphic information is capable of interpretation, and the artists attempt to retreat behind his work is undermined.
