Since 2007 the Café Aroma Photogalerie has been showing different facets and aspects of Berlin, taken by promising young artists and authentic amateurs and professionals, under the heading of Berlin 360°. On the occasion of the European Month of Photography, the gallery is presenting photographs by Ulrike Kopetzky. Entitled Berlin: Sex-Geschäfte [Berlin: Sexual Transactions], Kopetzkys exhibition investigates the public and hidden face of Berlins brothels and streetwalkers.
Prostitution is an expression of the lifestyle of the big city. Ulrike Kopetzky takes us into discreet domestic establishments, shows us a new class of flat-rate bordello and observes publicly visible streetwalking practices. She puts providers of sexual services and brothel proprietresses in front of the camera. They are still complaining about double standards; more recently they have been fighting against closures based on public building regulations. With historic photographs as of the well-known Scala pleasure resort from the twenties, at what is today Martin-Luther-Strasse 14-18 Kopetzky traces the tradition of the worlds oldest profession in Berlin.
