Mens faces, only schematically recognisable behind a milky window pane their contours are unclear, the facial features vague. Berlin-based photographer Loredana Nemes (born in Sibiu, Romania, in 1972) uses a Linhof plate camera to capture a mens world in Berlin, taking her pictures in Turkish, oriental and Arab male-frequented cafés in Neukölln, Kreuzberg and Wedding.
The first encounters that inspired her work were experienced by the artist as a twelve-year-old, when she spent half a year in Shiraz, Iran. Drawn by extreme curiosity about this alien and fascinating culture, she approaches places where she as a woman is not permitted to enter. I photograph their outer membrane, which suggests the inner world only schematically and makes visible the separation between the worlds, Nemes says. The result of this photographic dialogue is to be seen in portraits of Ali, Ünal, Kemal or Rasim, which throw both cultural and visual boundaries into relief.
