The exhibition shows pictures from the Charleroi Museum of Photography, as well as works by contemporary Belgian artists which have already been presented at the Liège Biennial.
The exhibition offers an overview of the past and present of Belgian photography and media art. It aims to highlight themes, moods, movements and forms that are characteristic of the visual and photographic creative work of the country. Notable relations are found between the art works of the past and of the present as if, in spite of all appearances to the contrary, an indefinable Belgian identity were to find a way to materialize itself in the sensitive manner it deals with faces and landscapes. Full of poetry and also irony (sometimes at the artists own expense), these works remind us of Belgiums surrealist traditions.
An exhibition organised, under the auspices of Belgiums presidency of the European Council, by the Liège International Biennial of Photography and the Visual Arts and the Charleroi Museum of Photography.
