Cadavre Exquis [Exquisite Cadaver] is a kind of collective game which the Surrealists developed in the 1920s. The first player wrote something down spontaneously on a piece of paper, folded it and passed it on. The next player, not seeing what had already been written, added a further spontaneous contribution, and so on.
This same principle was adopted by the ParisBerlin>fotogroup in 2009 for a project of its own. A member of the group would receive a photo, being given a week in which to provide a photographic response. The point of reference could be the subject matter, the form, the theme, the colour or anything else. The response photo would be sent to a central address, and forwarded by the organisers to the next photographer in the chain. The sequence of photographers had been determined in advance by drawing lots. A total of 47 photographers, the majority based in Berlin and Paris, took part in the project. The exhibition Cadavre Exquis shows the results.
