If we look at photography since 1945, it is bound to strike us that in almost all countries and at all times the most distinguished fashion photographers have been in the front rank of photographic professionals. From Avedon to Bergemann it has always been fashion photography that achieved success by telling us something about the time, and perhaps still more than about the clothes. And how does it look today? What names occur to us that have not been familiar since as long ago as the eighties?
And yet there is still fashion photography today that harks back to a time when fashion and art were able to encounter in the photographic medium. Anita Bresser creates a parallel society with her pictures a world behind our world. Exciting, alien, irritating and probably even more honest, because clothes in the magazines look different nowadays from the way they look when worn. And it is this world behind ours that gives us insights into our own time a time defined by the constant creation of virtual worlds which increasingly overlap with reality.
