In 2009 Jessica Backhaus (born in Cuxhaven in 1970) moved from New York to Berlin. Her exhibition represents a highly personal engagement with her surroundings and everyday life as influenced by this change of place. Central to her work is the capture of daily objects, the pinpointing of poetic moments with a resonance going beyond the actual motif shown. The photographs are juxtaposed with the films about my mother and Minute, for which she has searched through her mothers photographic albums, assembled a collection of images and added background music.
On the occasion of the Month of Photography, Vice Versa is showing for the first time the photographic series Die Welt wird schöner mit jedem Tag [The World Becomes More Beautiful Every Day], due to be brought out by Revolver Publishing in an edition of 25 copies, each with three signed and numbered prints. Other books by the artist have been published by Kehrer Verlag (Jesus and the Cherries, What still remains and One day in November).
