Showing children and their parents as having the same size undermines the otherwise clearly defined relations between them. The child is no longer an object for the parents, but becomes a subject with rights of his or her own. A vision of the child in alarmingly large size undermines the customary view of parents and children.

Gabrielle Strijewskis photographs show mother-daughter and father-daughter combinations, coming from different social backgrounds. By allowing small children to grow to the size of the adult, the photographer confers on them the status of an independent subject. Viewers of the 180-centimetre-high pictures find themselves matched in size and eye to eye with the persons portrayed.
