Berlin as a heap of ruins has left a searing record on our collective memory. After the War it became a frontline city. The Wall traumatised my generation. Up to 1984 I photographed the derelict houses in East Berlin with their bullet holes, the empty spaces between the buildings, the streets with their coal tips. The little peoples district. The biggest injury to the city I only experienced after 1985, when I was able to approach the Wall from the other side. The temporary use of the fallow border land as an autonomous field for experiment or a vulgar picnic area. Here and there, it was a case of almost villagey structures though with very different actors. The slowing down of time, absence of any material driving force. After the fall of the Wall came the reconstruction of the city centre. Mutual migration of population. Gentrification. Today I am looking for traces. For the new, the strange. The subjective view of the passer-by is maintained. Light rays, associations, faces. (Barbara Metselaar Berthold)
