Places almost empty of people mostly shots of an urban environment. It could be Athens, or it could be Barcelona or Berlin. A familiar house, a hotel, a museum. Eni Koukoulas pictures embody an inner and outer world simultaneously. They touch on areas that lead the eye of the viewer offside, into a status of liminality. Shaped recesses occur frequently as a theme; the light is sometimes uncanny, uninhabited or disquieting. Stylistically the pictures are kindred in nature. We approach them in a kind of defiant stillness cleft spaces, alienated people, fragmentary creatures and objects.
The photos that make up In Between were taken over the last three years. They form part of a bigger project entitled Another Place. That project was already featured in an individual exhibition on the occasion of the Athens Photographic Festival in November 2008.
