Digital technology in photography is generally aimed at simplifying the process by which a picture is created and perfecting the final result with as much verisimilitude as possible. The technological control does however lead to a loss of photographic freedom possibly even to a sculptural uniformity.
In his individual exhibition at Galerie Hunchentoot, Gregor Stephan uses the same technological possibilities with a view to integrating (or reintegrating) the element of chance, which is to say imperfection, as part of the photographic process. So loss of control becomes an essential component of the process of artistic creation.
The technical imperfections, signalled by erroneous colours, lines, ramifications, scratches, dust particles, hairs, blurred contours and so on, generate a distance from the photographed reality and invite viewers to close the gap with their own perceptions.
Gregor Stephans work was shown at EXPO 2010 in Shanghai.
