On the occasion of the 100th birthday of Izis (Israëlis Bidermanas), the Berlin Institute of French Culture is joining with the Freundeskreis Willy-Brandt-Haus e.V. [Friends of the Willy Brandt House, Regd. Assn.] to host a comprehensive retrospective of around 300 works of the well-known Franco-Lithuanian photographer. Izis left his homeland for Paris at the age of 19. His pictures trace a fascinating portrait of Jewish Lithuania.
The exhibition at the Institute of French Culture comprises Le cirque dIzis, showing motifs from the world of the circus, with jugglers, fire-swallowers and a cabinet of curiosities, and Le monde de Chagall, with portraits of Marc Chagall, who was a close friend of the photographer. In 1963-64 Izis was the only photographer permitted to follow Chagalls work on the ceiling of the Paris Opera and document it with the camera.
