Free from any sentimental recollections, the city of Kaliningrad and its surroundings are the central focus of this poetic photographic essay by Arndt Beck for ohne Heimweh [without nostalgia] must be understood as distancing the artist from the German nostalgia trippers, who when they visit Kaliningrad are only looking for traces of the lost German city of Königsberg. Arndt Becks vision is directed to other objects Soviet monuments, for example, celebrations of the victory over Fascism and the big Forest Cemetery but the city and its surroundings also appear in all their ordinariness. This is where he finds his motifs, between the priorities of history and the present. His unassuming observations largely exclude individual human beings from view. This extensive photographic essay was created during a six-week visit in the spring of this year. It is now being shown for the first time, under the curatorship of Brigitte Graf and with the support of the Bezirkskulturfonds Lichtenberg [Lichtenberg District Cultural Fund].
