When we take into account the way in which todays artistic photography has taken possession of the subject matter of traditional street photography, even if in colour and in large picture formats, the black and white street photographs of Rudi Meisel are occasion for comment. Here is an artist who takes conventional photographs of European big cities and deliberately lays himself open to the mistaken impression that they originate in an earlier decade. This irritates the viewer. When Meisel moves from Berlin, where he lives, to the big city abroad, his vision for the remarkable phenomenon occurring on his doorstep becomes still more acute. What may he not yet find, in the driven chaos of the streets, calling for interpretation? The streets mutate to a stage, and passers-by become the actors of their time. This could have been captured in moving pictures, but a visual continuum of that kind would lack the formal concentration with which Rudi Meisel as a photographer is concerned. His pictures compress, take moments as the basis for a readable reality to emerge.
Dr Enno Kaufhold will give an introductory address at the opening of the exhibition.
