This is the first ever glimpse of the historic teaching resource archive of the Design faculty at Berlins Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft [University of Applied Sciences]. The university has maintained an archive of historic glass slides that were used at the predecessor of todays institution in the years since 1900 for teaching purposes, making use of what was then an innovative medium. They were acquired from famous companies engaged in the production of slides for teaching purposes, like Dr Franz Stoedtner in Berlin and E.A. Seemanns Seestern Institute of Photography in Leipzig.
This exhibition at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt shows photographic images of gentlemens and ladies fashions from the years 1900 to around 1936, taken from the historic teaching resource archive. The fashion ideals of the day at the same time served as a model for aspiring students. Supplemented by a short account of the photographic production companies, these historic large-format slides not only illuminate fashion education in the fashion-conscious city that Berlin then was they also illuminate a chapter in the history of photography.
