Five photographers on the interface of photography and modernisation... The title, borrowed from Chaplins masterpiece, plays on peoples scepticism and blind belief in relation to technical progress. Engaging with the phenomenon of global urbanisation, Alexandra Schraepler shows photos from her series China Transformations. Sabine Wild is another artist who looks to Asia. She transforms the architecture of Shanghai with the help of digital graphic editing. Jörg Schmiedekinds Adlershof reflects the attractions of the idyllic retreat and traditional living patterns in this part of the city. Matthias Hagemann works with long-exposure pinhole cameras and succeeds in capturing a single shot over a period of months setting slowness in opposition to the classic elements of modernisation like dynamism and speed. In sightseeing Susanne Wehr shows photographs from her copious collection of anonymous private photographs (the Volks-Bild project), and uses this as a basis for analysing the behaviour of tourists in a city setting.
