Disguised as the Bread Man, Tatsumi Orimoto roams through city spaces, trying in this way to come into contact with the introverted urban population and break through the anonymity of the metropolis of today. Bread is the central element of his works, which are fundamentally concerned with the themes of communication and interaction. Bread, after all, calls forth numerous associations as a fundamental means of nourishment and symbol of Christian iconography, as well as in connection with our own consumer behaviour patterns and world poverty in general.
Another central theme of Orimotos artistic creation is his mother. Since the death of her husband she has been suffering from Alzheimers, and needs to be looked after constantly by her son. In his pictures of his mother, Tatsumi Orimoto makes our attitudes to socially marginalised groups the focus of his thematic and symbolic interest.
