The term noir can be applied to many moods and situations the dark and the ungraspable, the power and the danger, the pessimism and the doubt, the hardness, the dramatic, or the sense that there is no way out.
Noir Complex presents nine collections that pick up and extend the aesthetic and thematic implications of this genre, which for the most part finds its home in film or in literature. Superordinate concepts like City, Destruction and Death provide a framework for the reflection of places and structures, narrative modes and social totalities. Bringing together storyboard sequences, serial documentary records, photographic scenarios, found footage projections and combinations of text and graphics, the exhibition makes it plain how far the ramifications and formal possibilities of noir as a genre can be taken. These works speak of subtle violence, social destruction, urban erosion, death threats and political unrest. Overall the exhibition is characterised by an atmosphere of subliminal menace.
