When Stefan Koppelkamm journeyed through East Germany in 1990 after the fall of the Wall, but before Reunification he had formed the project of capturing on film a state of affairs which he supposed was not going to be around much longer. It was not the new aspects the glaring advertising messages of invasive capitalism that interested him. He was more concerned with the retrospective vision, with the documentation of what, in his view, the cities of the German Democratic Republic stood for. An attentive observer, he focused on everyday features house façades and frontages, municipal squares and street vistas.
Ten to twelve years later the photographer visited all these places again, capturing the old motifs a second time from exactly the same standpoint. The paired pictures created in this way not only document the far-reaching changes in the state of urban development, they also reflect the social and economic transformation of the new federal states.
