In his photographic series Paradisien [Paradise Land], shown here for the first time in Berlin, Tim Kubach is concerned with the nature substitutes of our megalopolitan leisure society. He photographs these artificial paradises amusement pools, shopping malls, sport and adventure centres, leisure and amusement parks, zoological gardens, wildlife reserves and indoor skiing complexes capturing all their artificiality, suppositious safety and the sometimes dubious taste of their creation in cool documentary style. With minute attention to detail, he simply reproduces what is there and triggers associations, while declining to make moral judgments about the spectacle. People seem rather peripheral to Kubachs depiction of these surreal and permanently available paradisal settings. And yet perhaps the lack of the human element in these irritating and synthetic-seeming scenarios actually tells us more about the feelings, contradictions, fantasies and lifestyles of modern urban humanity than any photographic approach that focuses on the human subject directly.
