For the photographer and film maker Uwe Döbbeke, the camera is like an instrument of research opening up a fourth dimension for experience of the world. Frozen time mutates the living present into a picture of historic simultaneity and layering. The walkway below Potsdamer Platz in Berlin is fixed on film, to become a place of transformation. The illuminated skeletal stairways appear like torsos of an earlier epoch, while opening up wide historic perspectives. The contemporary architectural elements become perceptible as artefacts. The different spatial and material dimensions, in which people appear both as real persons and as immaterial reflections and shadows, point to the metaphysical dimension in which they transcend their lifetimes. Plunged in a diffuse darkness that is interrupted by green-lit areas, the spatial breadth generates a mysterious, dreamy and underworld atmosphere.
