Pernilla Zetterman: Close
The Helsinki School
PHOTO EDITION BERLIN

Pernilla Zetterman: Behind No. 1
2003 © Pernilla Zetterman
In her series Close Pernilla Zetterman makes equestrian culture, with its customs and rituals, the central point of her photographic interest. In this environment she shows us mechanisms of human control, discipline and power. But her pictures also speak of love and trust. Close shots of the horses show the intimate connection between human and animal, and are in sharp contrast with still lifes depicting riding accessories like whips and reins, and other tools of behavioural control.
Pernilla Zetterman lives and works in Stockholm, Sweden. She studied photography in Sweden and Finland, and is regarded as one of the outstanding artists of the Helsinki School. Her works have been shown in numerous individual and group exhibitions, among them the travelling exhibition The Helsinki School at the Wolfsburg Art Museum in 2009. Her works feature in collections of the Photographic Museum of Winthertur, the Hasselblad Foundation and elsewhere. Close is her first individual exhibition at this gallery.
