Alan Luft is an American photographer with German ethnic roots. He has been visiting Berlin at regular intervals for 25 years. These visits have resulted, impressively, in almost 11,000 black and white photographs of the city and its inhabitants. Coming from a German-speaking farming community in Wisconsin, he is interested in the different social layers of the city. His childhood in an isolated farming community taught him values but was not immune from prejudice. This made him want to get to know different kinds of people and understand their lives. He chose Berlin as the location for his researches, principally because he sees the city as being one of the artistic capitals of the world.
