Ralf Grossek is concerned with problems and their solution. Since 2006 the artist has been working on his Sammlung Funktionale Absichten [Functional Intentions Collection], created as an archive and constituting a photographic stocktaking of our endeavour to order and organise a living space of our own. In this context Grossek has created categories of his own like ordering directing, supporting holding or securing closing in which he sums up the meaning of a picture in terms of the function of that which it shows. [
Grosseks pictures are empty of people, avoid superfluous information and release things out of their actual significant context. By reducing the image to a tight picture detail, he allows its basic functionality to appear as a closed system. This results in effects on the viewer that are frequently strange and sometimes peculiar. Ralf Grosseks Functional Intentions Collection is being shown in its entirety for the first time under the auspices of the Month of Photography.
