Julia Kissina: Ein Mensch auf einer Säule
2009 © Julia Kissina / 18m Galerie
In the history of photography, extreme perspectives are nothing new. Julia Kissinas pictures, however, give rise to a world where the normal experience of seeing ceases to apply. There is no up or down, three dimensions are perceived as a flat surface, gravity is eliminated. Like a person on a carousel the viewer loses all sense of direction, so as to be able to focus wholly on the shapes at the centre of the pictures.
The photos of the series Schatten werfen Menschen [Shadows Cast People] were taken by Julia Kissina over the last three years from her Berlin balcony. Seen from this perspective, relations are reversed: real persons project beings which we are capable of seeing as a result of cultural influences: Mickey Mouse, Nosferatu, the Minotaur, a serial killer, a bear with a revolver or a multistorey woman These pictures have not been digitally manipulated, but they show the materialisation of the immaterial.
