Memories are made of a marvellous substance deceptive and yet compulsive, powerful and yet shadowy. Recollection cannot be relied on, and yet there is no reality except for the reality our memory holds. Every moment we live through owes its meaning to the preceding one. The essence of the present and future would be lost if the trace of the past were to be deleted from our awareness. Between us and nothingness there is only the power of our memories, though these are not better than a fragile and problematic defence. (Klaus Mann, Der Wendepunkt [The Turning Point]).
Aenne Burghardt takes this quotation as the epigraph to her photographic novel überdeutschland. 25 analogue black and white photographs are on view at the Steglitz Town Hall. überdeutschland is a narrative in pictures. The artists inspiration came from a visit to the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. A first novel generally includes a lot of autobiographical elements, and photographic novels are no exception to the rule.
