Technical Matters shows photo-based works by Holger Bär, Tony Conway, Jay Mark Johnson and Stefan Roloff. In their very different ways, all four artists make use of the resources of digital photography. Bärs painting machines translate photographic images into the traditional medium of oil painting. He is principally interested in the question to what extent photography has changed our conception of the world. Conway processes digital photographs on the computer to a point where their essence is revealed in almost abstract forms. Reinforced by painting and drawing on acrylic glass layers, digital and manual processes here overlap, giving rise to a plastically holistic effect. Johnson works with a modified panoramic camera. The spatial x-axis of the picture is replaced by a temporal one, making it possible for his pictures to open up unexpected views. Roloff is a pioneer of computer-supported image processing. His portrait series When 6 is 9 combines inner and outer shots in the same picture, so as to capture a person's different momentary aspects.
