Michael Wolf is noted for his large-format architectural photos of Chicago, and still more of Hong Kong, where he has been living for more than 15 years.
His latest pictures have also been created in the big city. This time it is Tokyo that features. But not Tokyos architecture. Michael Wolfs Tokyo Compression sets its sights on the craziness of Tokyos underground system. He has chosen a point of view for these shots where his camera would be presented with an unrelenting flood of new images from one minute to the next.
Hundreds of thousands of people every day spend two or more hours in this underground hell, hemmed in between glass, steel and other people below the level of the city as they pass on their way to work and home again. In Michael Wolfs pictures we look into countless human faces, all trying in their way to sustain this evident madness.
Michael Wolf will be at the gallery for the opening. Tokyo Compression is being brought out as a book in parallel to the exhibition (a co-production by Peperoni Books and Asia One).
