Watching You Watching Me shows the results of a student exchange between D.E.S.T.A. for Africa, a photography college in Addis Ababa, and the Neue Schule für Fotografie [New School for Photography] in Berlin. Five students of each college had the opportunity of travelling to the other country and familiarising themselves with its culture, developing their own points of view and so questioning their own cultural conditioning.
Living, studying and working in a big city are common features linking the students of the two continents, serving as a joint point of departure for the analysis and illustration of similarities, overlaps and differences.
The exhibition makes public the results of an ongoing learning process a new view of Africa and Europe, each seen from the others point of view. A view far removed from the widespread clichés about the continents, which reproduces the special features of the countries in question.
The exhibition has been organised and curated by Aida Muluneh and Eva Maria Ocherbauer.
