Olaf Holzapfel searches preferably in big cities like Tokyo for the traces left on urban spaces by landscape and visual history. In his series Nakano Sakaue incidental details, like Tokyos guidance system for the blind, become the object of contemplation. Jagged-edged, dissected and evidently without any imposed standard of order, these signs appear to be a random concatenation and yet still make sense, on the basis of their own visual logic. The ground underfoot describes a form of communication. The signs make mental inner space into the periphery, illustrate the transition of the inner world of the perceiving blind inhabitant of the megalopolis to his outer world.
Holzapfels photographs aspire to prove the opposite of a final form, the opposite of anything definite. They show that the ends of thinking are visible in the everyday.
