Damaged houses, blocks of flats in urgent need of renovation and a high proportion of unoccupied buildings these were typical of the Berlin-Mitte district until the mid-1990s. There was no internet and no mobile phones. But no night went by without an archaic party or an experimental exhibition. Eva Otaño Ugarte perceived it as an environment in ruins, and asserted nonetheless that the human soul is blossoming.
Berlin Underground, 19911996 is a series of black and white photographs in which classic pictorial compositions and contrasts support a pointedly poetic narrative structure.
One of the photos shows a young man in jeans and a checked shirt. He is sitting on a chair and talking into a telephone. Behind him a dirty window stands open, next to him there is a wall with graffiti, light shines into the room, he gives an impression of concentration. This in fact is a free telephone in a squatted house.
Otaño Ugartes works show a raw world that is intimately known. These are moments that have been silently captured and have endless stories to tell.
