This exhibition shows photos of labour immigrants to Berlin around the year 1970. Photographers of Landesbildstelle Berlin [the Berlin Federal State Photographic Archive], the local photographic archives and other West Berlin institutions were commissioned to take these pictures by the Berlin authorities. Although the works have been constantly accessible since they were created, they have hardly entered the collective memory. The Mitte Museum is now once more shining the spotlight on these photographs, which were for the most part created in serial sequences. These pictures of foreign fellow citizens as they were called in the official parlance of the day are being presented here as testimony to photographic history, while at the same time representing important pictorial records of the history of immigration in Germany.
