The view from the window, or from outside looking in, is a photographic reflex. The oldest photograph that has come down to us is a shot from the studio of Nicéphore Niépce to the outside. This exhibition shows young artists exploring the window as a theme. Views from windows, into windows, along windows windows which for all their fragility represent an often uncrossable threshold. A window as a hole which we cannot pass through except with the ideas, wishes and imaginations that accompany our vision. This is a freedom denied to the body. In Jim Jarmuschs film Down by Law, the three protagonists end up in prison. One of them draws a window on the wall of the cell with a piece of coal. Having an imperfect command of English, he asks Excuse me. Do you say, I look at the window, or do you say, I look out the window? His comrade answers him, Well, in this case, Bob, Im afraid youve gotta say, I look at the window.
