This exhibition offers a comprehensive overview of a photographic genre that has always hovered between scientific precision and artistic fantasy. It shows works emanating from modern art and contemporary photography which have been inspired by the worlds of the microcosm. It also includes works which were created in a purely scientific context, albeit to the highest aesthetic standards before avant garde photographers took possession of microphotography for purposes of artistic production, and gave it the status of an art form.
The range presented extends from Robert Kochs photographs of bacteria and Johann Diedrich Möllers diatom preparations to studies by Alfred Ehrhardt and Carl Struwe, and electronic grid microscope photographs by Becher student Claudia Fährenkemper. It reveals a wide panorama of fascinating images of all that remains hidden from the human eye.
