Hardly any other contemporary photographer has a mimetic understanding of the play of masks and personae on the social network to rival that of Olaf Martens. What appears authentic in his pictures is frequently the product of overactive fantasy, what deems absurd and unimaginable no less frequently seems incontrovertibly genuine. Perversion in the literal sense of the word is the basis of his aesthetic approach pursued until the appearance breaks down and the contours of the true in the false or the real in the fictitious come into view.
