In Schrottographie II [Scrapography II], Fred Kojder, born in Paris in 1969, sets out to investigate the traces of modern civilisation its remains and its ruins. The world he discovers through the lens is a universe in which human beings no longer seem to have a place debris of cars in thickets, bits of toys in the sand, ships corpses in a swamp. Kojders pictures show the self-destruction and abysmal decay of humanity, and can be understood as a metaphor for the present generation a generation of economic crisis and environmental catastrophe, living in an ever more dehumanised world.
Kojder is principally interested in matter and the abstraction of matter, as a result of which he succeeds in convincing the viewer of the beauty of the unbeautiful. He concentrates on ungraceful details, exaggerates their contrasts and so reveals to us our own dark side. What comes into being is a topography of the shattered fragments of a civilisation which continues to exist in a nature that has become alien to us.
