A photographic marathon is a competition under strict conditions. The competitors are given a total of 24 individual themes, which they then have to render photographically, in the prescribed sequence, within the space of 12 hours. The individual themes fall under the heading of an overall theme which changes from year to year, and are kept secret until they are announced. For 13 years now, these competition rules have stimulated participants to capture the dynamic life of Berlin in their pictures from year to year.
This exhibition of the Berlin Photographic Marathon is a retrospective in a double sense of the word. We are showing the winning series of the last ten photographic marathons, and so at the same time a comprehensive retrospective of the city of Berlin itself an almost chronological and unique documentation of the constantly changing metropolis. Thanks to our partnership with the photographic marathons of other European cities, we can also include a view of the European dimension, by showing similar winning series from Cardiff and Copenhagen.
