Whether he is photographing Madonna, Linda Evangelista or Catherine Deneuve, the melancholy pictures of Peter Lindbergh look behind the star cult, styling and make-up to reveal the individual personality in all its strength and concomitant fragility. His photographs often appear to be chance snaps or photojournalistic shots, characterised by a gloomy, almost surreal atmosphere and a purist aesthetic. Lindbergh avoids dominating backgrounds and superfluous accessories, and so creates a clear and expressive pictorial idiom, generally based on fine shades of black and white. As a visual teller of tales, he frequently arranges his compositions to resemble famous film scenes or works with photographic quotations, so as to bring out more vividly the personality of the sitter. So for Lindbergh fashion is only the occasion for a picture which reflects an attitude to life, while at the same time representing a piece of cultural history.
C/O Berlin is presenting a comprehensive collection of Peter Lindberghs work, comprising 120 pictures, some of them in large format, polaroids and films.
