No Bill Posting
Galerie 1892

What, thats supposed to be art? We always tear the stuff down! This was the surprised comment of an employee of Berlins municipal cleaning services, on seeing a photographer taking pictures of the torn advertising posters on a Telekom junction box.
Glass containers, doors, electrical junction boxes nothing is safe from the wild proliferation of posters, some publicising rap concerts, others praising the divine virtues of a guru or advertising a demonstration. Perhaps youve always wanted to take up yoga, youre looking for a room in a shared apartment or just in need of a mother for the playgroup? The next street lamp or traffic light post may have a stub offering the information you need. The enormous variety of the metropolis is reflected in the spectrum of its advertising.
But a poster that is stuck up today may be covered over tomorrow. Sun, wind and rain cause the colours to bleach and make the paper brittle, and the tendency of passers-by to tear them down takes its toll. Berlin photographer Hartmut Gräfenhahn has captured these special places of urban communication in his photographs.
