Under the title NEW YORK Livin in the hood, the AFF Gallery is presenting pictures by two New Yorkers and two Berlin photographers, all of them focusing on the New York of the little people. These are shots of the New York neighborhoods, like Lower Manhattan, TribeCa, Harlem and SoHo, and of the people who live and work in this environment.
Each of the four photographers interprets this theme in his own way. So we find here deliberately staged street portraits from Chris Zedano classic street photography focusing on dodgy situations and the moment of truth (David Battel / Jörg Rubbert), or alternatively an atmospheric approach to New York as a macrocosmos with the help of a simple Holga camera (Oliver Jacob). Created with analogue technology and in documentary black and white, the pictures cover a time span from the early nineties to the present day, so that not only processes of transformation but certain parallels in the lives of the inhabitants make themselves felt.
