Daring to Dream. 50 Years of Hipgnosis

Photo design and album cover art by Aubrey Powell and Storm Thorgerson

Aubrey Powell, Storm Thorgerson

1968 is considered to be the seminal year of the 1960s cultural revolution. It’s also the year Hipgnosis was born, the legendary British photo design studio run by Aubrey Powell and Storm Thorgerson, which created some of the most famous album covers in rock music history. With their radical ideas, spectacular photo shoots, and innovative design, until 1983 Hipgnosis created covers for a wide range of LPs including Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Genesis, Peter Gabriel, and AC/DC.
Powell and Thorgerson studied film and photography, revered Buñuel, Godard, Duchamp, Magritte, Man Ray, and Dali. Their surreal photomontages and epic photographic landscapes testify to their artistic roots and influences. The record covers of Wish You Were Here, Dark Side of the Moon, Presence, Scratch and others became visual icons, album cover design was elevated to the level of fine art, and people loved them the world over. The exhibition presents large-scale album cover prints and black-and-white photo portraits of famous musicians, some of which have never been shown, signed and in limited edition.
