Bright Moments

Bogdan Dziworski

In the fall of 2018, the Berlin Galerie Hilaneh von Kories presents the photographic work of the Polish filmmaker and photographer Bogdan Dziworski (born 1941), who is considered one of the most important proponents of avant-garde and experimental film in Polish cinema. Although he is one of his native country’s most renowned image-makers, in Germany his work remains largely unknown. His photographs in particular are a discovery. Since the 1960s, Bogdan Dziworski has created a unique body of work that has often inspired the honorary title “Poland’s Cartier-Bresson.” His photographs were made without commission; now, they are on view in Germany for the first time. The analogue black-and-white images, rich in contrast, offer insight into everyday life in Polish cities during the second half of the twentieth century.

Bogdan Dziworski: “My photographs from this time are never staged [...] you have to wait for this one particular moment in which reality itself determines the stage. You have to be lucky. And I was.”
