Unavoidable times

The “unavoidable times” in the GDR were the waiting periods between high school graduation and college, between military service and vocational training, between one training and another, inevitable gaps in the résumé that couldn’t be filled otherwise. In spite of it all, these were occasionally very valuable periods—all of a sudden one had free time that hadn’t been planned and wouldn’t have otherwise existed: precious, unique, unrepeatable. The exhibition “Unavoidable times” presents photographs taken without any connection to a concrete project: quiet, valuable, unplanned, and beautiful in their singularity.
