With the photographer Marie Tomanova – living in New York and born in the Czech Republic – and the curator Thomas Beachdel we talk about her journey from a small Czech town to the multicultural metropolis. Why did she as a trained painter take up photography only after her relocation? What role plays photography in dealing with her own identity as well as with the identity of young New Yorkers? And why do her pictures attract attention worldwide? Do they gain even more relevance in the current political development in the US? The discussion will be in English.

"In the framework of the Portfolio-Review, photographers and photo artists from Berlin can present their work to experts from galleries, museums, picture editors and publishers. In intensive 20-minute one-to-one discussions they have the opportunity to make new professional contacts and to receive valuable feedback. The Portfolio-Review will conclude with the so-called Portfolio-Walk, to which the general public is invited to review the works of the participating photographers. The programme is funded by the European Social Fund (ESF) and the State of Berlin. Therefore only photographers from Berlin can participate."

Benita Suchodrev is a Russian-American portrait and documentary photographer concerned primarily with depicting the human subject in a sociocultural context. She works intuitively with great regard for authenticity, spontaneity and "the decisive moment". Her work has been published in Of Lions and Lambs (Kehrer 2019), 48 Hours Blackpool (Kehrer 2018), Nachtleben Berlin: 1974 bis heute (Metrolit 2013) and Berlin Now (teNeues 2009). It has been exhibited nationally and internationally and has been widely covered by television, radio and print media. Benita’s photographs are part of the Rafael Tous Foundation for Contemporary Art in Barcelona, the Michael Horbach Stiftung in Cologne as well as private collections in Moscow, Berlin and New York.

Paul Hutchinson, Ralf Marsault, and Ashkan Sahihi gaze through the photographic lens at phenomena of urban culture and communitization. Nevertheless, their protagonists, subjects, and artistic approaches couldn’t be more different. In a panel discussion marking the publication of three volumes by Hutchinson, Marsault, and Sahihi, Distanz asks the artists: in today’s digital world, what is the value of analogue photography as a record of the time? What role do artistic publications play in this? And how can the medium of photography artistically document processes of urban change? A look at her haunting portraits gives us the feeling that we can see through to the inner core of the people photographed and their otherwise hidden character traits. It’s a skill based on craftsmanship: Katja Ruge learned her trade as a photo laboratory technician from the bottom up, having worked as a photo assistant in England and as a music promoter and art director before dedicating herself entirely to photography in 2000. With her subtle powers of observation and an intuitive sense of visual composition, Ruge has already created hundreds of iconic portraits for magazines, musicians, and artists.

Blinde Fotograf*innen – das klingt nach einem Paradox. Ist der Akt des Fotografierens nicht unweigerlich mit dem Sehen verbunden? On the occasion of "Existing Elsewhere" exhibition, photographers Guevara Namer and Alaa Hassan will join in conversation. They will present for the first time to Berlin’s audience, and in Germany their artistic practices, which revolve around the visual investigation of topics, such as self-representation, affect, and exile; the experience of displacement; individual and collective memories as terrains where vanished realities transform, as well as archiving online and offline as relational tool.

Hailed by Terry Southern as the "Poet of Radical Photography" Miron Zownir's photographic work has been exhibited in galleries and museums in several countries from 1981 on. His photos have been published in 6 photobooks and he was featured in many international anthologies. He took up photography in the late 70s during the hey-days of the punk-phenomenon in West- Berlin and London, delivering a tight portrayal of the movement and its peculiar attitude towards life in limbo between a utopian vision of anarchy and nihilistic self-destruction. After 15 years in the States (NYC, Los Angeles and Pittsburgh) he returned to Berlin. In 1995 he went for three month to Moscow to descend into the lower depth of Post-Communist society. From the early 2000’s on Zownir ventured for several photo excursions to Poland, Bulgaria, Romania, California, the Ukraine and Istanbul. He is also a filmmaker and writer of crime novels.

Olaf Heine is a Berlin based and internationally working photographer. He studied photography and design at the Lette-Verein (Lette Society) in Berlin and is primarily known for his detailed and carefully staged portraits. His photographic works have been published on countless album covers, in international editorials, and the photographic books “Leaving the Comfort Zone” (2008), “I Love You but I’ve Chosen Rock” (2010), “Brazil” (2014), as well as “Rwandan Daughters” (2019). They have also been exhibited at the Camera Work Galerie Berlin, the Museum Folkwang in Essen, the Noorderlicht Fotogalerie in Groningen, the Salon Frieder Burda | Museum Frieder Burda and the Icon Gallery in Los Angeles, to name just a few. Besides collaborating with stars like U2, Iggy Pop, Coldplay, Radiohead, Sting, Nick Cave, and The Killers, he has shot international advertising campaigns and directed dozens of music videos for The Eagles or Rammstein.
